PTE Academic UKVI: Is It the Right English Test for Your UK Visa?

Most Ukrainians in the UK spend more time worrying about salary thresholds than about the English language test — which is understandable, but backwards in terms of what can derail an application fastest. The English test is a binary requirement: you either meet it or you do not, and a failed or wrong-level test result will reject your application regardless of how strong everything else is. Choosing the right Secure English Language Test (SELT), preparing for the right level, and understanding the 2026-2027 rule changes before you book means you are not paying £200 to sit the wrong test.

What Is a SELT?

A Secure English Language Test (SELT) is an approved English language test for UK visa applications. The Home Office maintains a list of approved providers and test formats. Not all English tests qualify — the IELTS Academic version is not a SELT, for example, only IELTS for UKVI is. The SELT regime exists to ensure tests cannot be cheated or certificates forged.

For Skilled Worker visa applications, the approved SELTs include:

  • IELTS for UKVI (Academic or General Training)
  • PTE Academic UKVI
  • Trinity ISE III

Each must be taken at an approved test centre. Home-proctored versions of these tests (which exist for non-visa purposes) do not qualify.

PTE Academic UKVI: Cost and Speed

PTE Academic UKVI costs approximately £200 (exact pricing varies by centre and location). Results are delivered within 48 hours — often within 24 hours — compared to IELTS, which takes 1-5 business days depending on whether you take the computer-based or paper-based version.

PTE Academic UKVI is offered at Pearson Vue test centres. UK locations include London (multiple centres), Birmingham, and Manchester, with additional centres in other major cities.

The speed advantage of PTE is meaningful for applicants working to a deadline — a UPE extension expiring, a job offer with a start date, or a CoS with a validity window. If you need an English test result fast, PTE is structurally faster than IELTS.

The format is fully computer-based. There is no human rater for speaking or writing sections — your responses are scored by Pearson's AI scoring engine. Some test-takers find this format easier (no face-to-face speaking pressure); others find it harder (the computer-based speaking tasks require responses within strict time windows and the format is unfamiliar on first sitting).

IELTS for UKVI: Cost and Format

IELTS for UKVI costs £257-£275 depending on the test centre and whether you book direct or through a partner centre. Results take 1-5 business days for the computer-based test; the paper-based test takes 13 calendar days for results.

Critical change from June 27, 2026: The paper-based IELTS for UKVI is being discontinued in the UK. From June 27, 2026, IELTS for UKVI is computer-only. If you prefer paper-based testing, you have until June 26, 2026 to sit a paper-based exam. After that date, the only format available is computer-based.

For most test-takers, this change is neutral — computer-based IELTS results arrive faster and the format has improved significantly. But if you have been planning around a paper-based test or have been waiting to book, the June 2026 deadline is a hard constraint.

What Level Do You Need?

The English language level requirement for a UK visa depends on the visa route and your immigration history.

For Skilled Worker visa applicants (new applicants from January 2026)

B2 (upper-intermediate) is now required for new applicants on Scale-up visas and High Potential Individual (HPI) visas from January 8, 2026.

For standard Skilled Worker applicants, the requirement remains B1 (intermediate). However, the trajectory is toward B2. The March 2027 ILR (Indefinite Leave to Remain) B2 requirement means that even if you enter on a B1 Skilled Worker visa today, you will need B2 level by the time you apply for settlement.

Mapping test scores to CEFR levels

Level IELTS for UKVI PTE Academic UKVI
B1 4.0 overall (no band below 4.0) 36-42
B2 5.5 overall (no band below 5.5) 59-75
C1 7.0 overall 76-84

For a standard Skilled Worker visa, you need B1: IELTS 4.0 overall with no band below 4.0, or PTE Academic UKVI score of 36 (some guidance sources state the minimum as 36 per component).

For ILR from March 2027, you will need B2: IELTS 5.5 with no band below 5.5, or PTE Academic UKVI approximately 59 per component.

The practical implication: if you are preparing for your Skilled Worker visa test now, it may be worth targeting B2 scores even though your immediate application only requires B1. B2 preparation is not dramatically harder than B1 preparation, and having a B2 result eliminates the need to retest before your ILR application in five years.

Exemptions: When You Don't Need a SELT

You are exempt from taking a SELT if you can prove English by other means:

  • UK degree: If you hold a degree awarded by a UK university, you are exempt.
  • Degree taught in English: If you hold a degree from a non-UK institution that was taught entirely in English, you can potentially use it to satisfy the English requirement — but you need a UK ENIC English Language Proficiency Statement and a Medium of Instruction letter from your university confirming the language of instruction. (See the separate post on UK ENIC Statements of Comparability for details on this process.)
  • Nationals of majority-English-speaking countries: Citizens of countries such as Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the USA are exempt. Ukraine is not on this list.
  • Previous approved test: If you held an approved Skilled Worker visa previously and demonstrated English then, you may not need to retest.

For Ukrainian applicants, the most common exemption route is the degree-taught-in-English option, which applies particularly to those who completed master's programmes at Ukrainian universities that offered English-medium instruction. Check whether your specific programme qualifies before booking a test.

The Graduate Visa and English Language

A brief note on the Graduate visa route, which is relevant for Ukrainians who completed UK degrees: the Graduate visa is a 2-year post-study work visa (reducing to 18 months for degrees completed after January 1, 2027) that allows unrestricted work in the UK. No new employer sponsorship is required, and no English test is required for the Graduate visa itself — the degree study satisfies the English requirement.

Graduate visa holders who then move to a Skilled Worker visa qualify as "new entrants" — which means the lower salary threshold of £33,400 applies rather than the standard £41,700. The new entrant discount is available for the first five years of your UK work history, or until you turn 26, whichever comes sooner.

If you are on a Student visa completing a UK degree, the sequence of Graduate visa → Skilled Worker visa is worth planning explicitly. The lower salary threshold is the immediate benefit; the fact that Graduate visa time does not count toward ILR (unlike Skilled Worker time) is the limitation. Moving to Skilled Worker as soon as you have an eligible role and sponsor starts the settlement clock that the Graduate visa alone does not.

Which Test Should You Choose?

Choose PTE Academic UKVI if:

  • You need results fast (within 48 hours)
  • You prefer computer-based testing
  • You are comfortable with AI-scored speaking tasks
  • The test centre locations are convenient for you

Choose IELTS for UKVI if:

  • You have sat IELTS before and know what to expect
  • You prefer the established format with human examiners
  • You need paper-based testing (before June 27, 2026 only)
  • Your test centre options are more accessible for IELTS locations

Both tests are accepted equally by the Home Office. The decision should be based on format preference, location, and timing — not on any assumption that one is easier to pass than the other. Your English level is what it is; the test format changes how it is assessed, not what is assessed.

What not to do: Book a test at the wrong level. If your application requires B1 and you test at A2, the test result cannot be used regardless of how quickly it arrived. Confirm the required level for your specific visa route before booking.

Timing Your Test

Build the test into your application timeline early. English test certificates from SELTs are valid for two years from the test date. Booking a test 4-6 months before your expected visa application gives you time to resit if your first attempt falls short, without expiring before you use the certificate.

For Ukrainians currently on humanitarian leave who are planning to switch to a Skilled Worker visa, the English test is one of the earliest documents to prepare — after the UK ENIC Statement of Comparability and before the employer conversation about sponsorship. Both the ENIC Statement and the English test result will be referenced in your visa application.

The Ukraine to UK Visa Pathway Guide covers the full English language testing landscape — including the B1 to B2 transition timeline, the exemption routes for degrees taught in English, and how the Graduate visa new-entrant discount integrates with Skilled Worker salary thresholds — alongside the complete pathway from humanitarian leave to settlement.
